PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS

Please be advised that the Oromocto Public Works Department will conduct their annual water main flushing and hydrant inspections beginning 12 July 2010 through to 13 August 2010. Flushing will occur Monday to Saturday inclusive, between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 midnight.

Please check your water before using as temporary loss of pressure and discolouration may result.

This work is being done as part of an annual maintenance program designed to provide better water quality and fire protection.

The Public Works Department is directed by the Superintendent of Public Works. Services provided or performed for the most part are determined by Town Council and/or Provincial and/or Federal regulations, and performed by the following sections:

Roads and Grounds Section:

The Roads and Grounds Section of the Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of all streets, sidewalks, curbs and parking areas as well as catch basins and the storm sewer system. Grass cutting, flowers and trees are also part of this section’s responsibilities. Also included is snow removal operations for the Town as well as all vehicle and equipment maintenance.

Building Maintenance Section:

The Building Maintenance Section maintains all Town owned buildings. This Section is also responsible for all traffic signage, roadway line marking and traffic control signal devices for the Town. During the summer months this section maintains the marina dockage on the Oromocto River.

Water and Sewage Section:

The Water and Sewage Section is responsible for the maintenance of sanitary sewerage system and the water distribution lines within the Town. The majority of the sewage is treated by CFB Gagetown, however this section also operates and maintains three smaller sewerage plants and numerous lift stations.

Snow Plowing/Removal:

Streets/Courts -

The Public Works Department provides plowing and sanding/salting services according to the following priorities:

* hospital routes and main arterials;
* collector streets;
* residential streets and courts;
* minor roads.

Please note that it is not possible to produce bare pavement on all streets immediately. It is to everyone’s benefit that the high traffic volume streets are plowed first.

Removal -

Snow is trucked from parking areas and some court areas for one or all of the following reasons:

* to increase visibility;
* to make room for an impending storm;
* to reduce a hazardous situation.

Sidewalks -

The Works Department plows and sands many of the Town s sidewalks and pathways. Priority is given to sidewalks in school areas and along main streets. Sidewalks are usually plowed during snow storms with a clean-up following. It is not possible to produce bare sidewalks in all conditions and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution.

Widening -

At times during the winter months it is necessary to widen streets by either pushing the snow banks back with the snow plow wings or, in some cases, using the large snow blowers. This practice is necessary to make room for subsequent snow storms. The displaced snow is kept within street right-of-way, where possible.

By-Laws/Regulations:

* On street parking is not allowed under Town By-Laws. This is strictly enforced during snow plowing operations and violators will have their vehicles towed.

* The placement of snow from a driveway or parking lot onto Town streets is forbidden.

* When plows arrive in your court or parking area please move your car to allow for better and complete snow clearing.

Snow Tips:

* Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition for the winter (tuned up, winter tires, etc.)

* If it is not essential for you to be on the road during a severe storm, please stay home.

* To help prevent localized flooding, try to keep the catch basin adjacent to your property free from snow and ice.

* Drive carefully. The Works Department attempts to minimize the impact of snow and ice. However, it is each motorist’s responsibility to drive according to road conditions. If it is slippery, slow down!
