Background
In recent years it became apparent that the cemeteries in the area were reaching their capacity, and that there was a need for a new cemetery to serve the population of Oromocto and the surrounding area. The Town of Oromocto, through the Mayor, Council and Staff recognized this need and were determined to remedy the problem.
A committee was formed in January 2006 to start the process. In the ensuing months the Town made available a ten-acre parcel of land in Oromocto West and has committed funding of $350,000.00 over 3 years (2007-2009) toward the startup costs. A Board of Directors was formed and the Oromocto Pioneer Gardens Cemetery Company Inc. was incorporated on 28 September 2007. This is a community cemetery serving all denominations. The Company is a non-profit, self-sustaining volunteer-run organization.
Through our research we have learned a great deal about the operation of a cemetery. We offer our clientele a variety of choices, whether they select traditional burials or cremation, and at prices and payment plans suited to every budget. We have learned that the cremation rate in Canada has been steadily increasing, although not as quickly in this area as elsewhere. That may be because people didn’t have attractive options for the interment of cremated remains.
We offer options in a setting that is welcoming, calm, appealing to the eye. As the word "Gardens" appears in our name, we hope to have many flowers and shrubs with seating areas where family members can visit, read if they wish, or meditate in comfort and enjoy their surroundings.
Location
The cemetery is located on Leger Street, off Pioneer Avenue. Just over four acres (4.2) have been cleared for the initial phase.
The Plan
The cemetery has been divided into three distinct sections. From the Leger Street entrance, the section to the left will accommodate traditional burial plots. The Columbarium Garden is located in the center. Five units were installed in November, 2007. These contain 260 niches ranging in size from 12"x12"x12" to 12"x12"x24". Additional units will be added in the future as demand requires.
To the right is the "Field of Honour" for those who have served in the military and in the police and fire services. This section will provide traditional gravesites and it is our hope that, with the support of others, a columbarium as well.
Official Opening
The cemetery opened for sales in June, 2008 and the first internment took place in July 2008. An official opening ceremony was held in September 2008.

Sales of columbarium niches and burial plots are now available for sale.
We offer a variety of niches in three different sizes. These are designed to accomodate 2, 3 or 4 urns, depending on the size/style of the urn you choose. Prices range from $1,050 to $3,700 plus HST.
Burial plots are each $850 plus HST. This price includes a charge of $200.00 for the monument foundation which is pre-installed.
Payment may be by Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card, cheque or Money Order. We also offer a one-year interest-free payment plan. With these options, and for your protection as well as ours, we are not able to accept cash payments.
PAYMENTS USING A DEBIT CARD
Most banks issue debit cards with a daily limit. The current limit for Scotiabank clients is $1000, with similar limits for other banks. Most of our sales exceed this amount. If you are planning to use your debit card for your purchase, you should first ensure that your daily limit allows for the required amount.
ELIGIBILITY FOR THE FIELD OF HONOUR
When you apply for a plot or niche in the Field of Honour, we will ask you for your service number and/or other proof of service because we do verify your eligibility. If you present your Record of Service Identification (CF75) at the time of purchase your eligibility would be confirmed. It would be most appreciated if we could scan it for our records. Verification will take longer if we need to secure your elegibility by other means.
PLEASE NOTE:
When we request information from clients, it is normally because it is required. However, some questions are asked to ensure that our records are as complete as possible. Research has shown us that people conducting genealogical studies are most successful when they can access accurate and complete records. Decades from now, when your decendants are asking the Board of the day about you, we would like to be able to tell them as much as possible. Perhaps you do not like your middle name and never tell anyone what it is, but if you tell us, we will keep that information confidential.

Charitable Donations
Many of the items we would like to have will take some time and assistance to acquire, becuase our funds are limited. We have created a "wish-list" for which we will be seeking donations. This includes items such as benches, a gate, proper signage, shrubs/flowers and equipment for our caretaker’s use, such as a ride-on lawnmower.
Memorial donations which the Board may direct to specific items would be appreciated as well. Also, we are aware that some families may wish to make donations-in-kind in memory of a loved one. Such offers will be subject to approval by the Board of Directors so that additions to the cemetery are in keeping with our overall design plan. We are applying to the government for designation as a registered charity. This will enable us to issue receipts for income tax purposes for all donations received.
Public Notification
As we continue to develop the cemetery, watch for updates on this site as well as notices in the monthly Oromocto Leisure Guide, the Oromocto Post and the Fredericton Daily Gleaner.
